I am sure I have said that before. However, lately I haven’t been able to write with music on. I am attempting to write upwards of 10,000 words per week and failing miserably. Writing takes time and concentration. It’s not like when your reading a book and suddenly you are the most interesting person in the room that everyone needs to tell their life story to. At. That. Minute. You can put the book down, politely listen with a look of exasperation on your face, then pick it up again within a sentence or two where you left off when the person FINALLY STOPS TALKING TO YOU.
So I try to write during my lunch hour or at home on weekends but there are too many things going on. The phones are ringing, people are talking, the dog needs to go out. The dishes need to be washed, the dryer just beeped, I want to eat everything that isn't nailed down, etc.
I now understand why authors go away to a cabin in the woods to write.
I took a day off from work to write and got almost 5,000 words down in a day. Not bad, although my goal was 10,000. When I sit down to write, I need to read what I wrote before so I know where I am in a scene, what day it is, what time it is, did I already write that scene? That takes time. By the time I am back into the story, I now need to figure out where I’m going. That takes time. By the time I figure that out, I’m 45 minutes in and have 15 minutes to actually write coherent sentences that move the story forward. And eat my lunch.
SO writing can be difficult for those who work full time and have families, but I’m not giving up. I have a few more stories to tell and if it takes me longer than I hoped, so be it.
Have a great week, keep reading, and keep writing!
